Who Gave Me the Mold?

This performance art features a performer wearing a long red fabric with a lot of bias labels attached to it. The performer moves around the performance space, inviting participants to approach them and remove the bias labels from the fabric. The intention of the performance is to raise awareness of bias and the ways in which it can impact individuals and communities. By creating a participatory experience, the artist is encouraging engagement and dialogue around issues of bias and identity. The goal of the performance art is to foster reflection, awareness, and action around issues of bias and social justice.
The red cloth covered in tags initially binds the performer like a bandage, but throughout the performance, the performer gradually frees themselves and completely releases the red cloth covered in tags. At the end of the performance, it appears that the performer has broken free from all constraints, but the only Chinese tag remains on their mouth and cannot be removed. This tag means "shut up". In Chinese culture, we are taught from a young age not to interfere in other people's affairs, so calling for social justice is essentially seen as meddling in idle affairs. Therefore, even though the artist has removed all the tags at the end, they still cannot shake off the label of their own culture.
